Chilblains

Published on Skin.

Chilblains are caused by exposure to cold and affect primarily the body parts that are more exposed to air and humidity: hands, feet, nose, and ears. Less frequently, they may also appear on the elbows, knees, and legs.

People who suffer from chilblains have abnormal reactions to cold and experience difficulty in maintaining the body temperature in exposed parts of the body. This is due to changes at the level of small surface blood vessels which contract and expand excessively thus keeping the blood from circulating freely and warming up the skin. Blood represents our identity and our joy of living. The circulatory system is directly associated with the experience of emotions. People with chilblains are people who control their emotions and do not free themselves or take advantage of the joys of life.
